CITATION

For leadership in online computing education through creation of innovative courses, tools, and inexpensive textbooks used worldwide providing access to quality software engineering education.

Armando Fox is a pioneer in the development of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and the creator of the Small Private Online Course (SPOC). The creation and promotion of his undergraduate software engineering course based on agile development and cloud deployment of software-as-a-service (SaaS) projects constitute an extraordinary contribution to computing education. Both the provision of an extremely affordable online text and the adaption of the course into many SPOCs have provided the model for the presentation of other MOOCs. Few educators have developed such a large-scale demonstration of innovative ideas and gone so far to enable others to adopt them in their own teaching. He exhibits leadership skills, passion for teaching, experience with teaching online courses, and deep understanding of the platform architectures for online education.
