Through his books and students, Jeffrey Ullman has had a tremendous impact on computer science education. His book "Principles of Database Systems", first published in 1980, revolutionized the content of database courses at all levels, moving it from a purely engineering discipline to one with a firm theoretical foundation. Despite competition from many other database texts, this book (now in its third edition) is still the premier general graduate-level database textbook.

Others of his textbooks, some of which were jointly authored, have also helped define new areas, and have been considered the standard texts in those areas for many years.

The list of Ullman's Ph.D. students is truly remarkable. There are few universities, much less individuals, that have graduated so many distinguished computer scientists. Ullman's students have had, and continue to have, a profound impact on computer science in general, and on the database field in particular.
