For pioneering the design and construction of large scale artificial intelligence systems, demonstrating the practical importance and potential commercial impact of artificial intelligence technology.

Edward Feigenbaum pioneered the construction of rule-based systems to solve domain-specific problems requiring extensive technical expertise. In collaboration with Nobel Laureate Joshua Lederberg, he developed Heuristic DENDRAL, a program that elucidated chemical structures from mass spectrograms at a professional level of competence. He and his students later developed similar systems to solve difficult problems in medicine, molecular genetics, structural engineering, x-ray crystallography and related domains. The technology has since become known as "knowledge engineering."

Together, Edward Feigenbaum and Raj Reddy have been seminal leaders in defining the emerging field of applied artificial intelligence and demonstrating its technological significance.
