For distinguished and significant service to the computer science community and ACM by initiating a Special Interest Group, developing an ACM Transaction, chairing several Special Interest Groups and serving as Editor in Chief of several ACM and IEEE publications.

Dr. Kim founded and Chairs the ACM Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery in Data and Data Mining (SIGKDD). He founded the new ACM Transactions on Internet Technology (TOIT) in 2000, and is serving as its Founding Editor in Chief. In 1981, Dr. Kim agreed to serve as Editor in Chief of the IEEE Technical Committee on Data Engineering's quarterly newsletter, Database Engineering. He turned this short newsletter into an influential, theme driven, research oriented publication, which is now required reading by database researchers and advanced developers. Dr. Kim also served as Editor-in-Chief of the ACM Transactions on Database Systems, from July 1982 ¿ June 2001.

He was elected chair of the ACM Special Interest on Management of Data (SIGMOD) in July 1989. Over eight years of leadership, he skillfully steered SIGMOD into one of ACM's most successful organizations which enabled the subsequent development of the SIGMOD Anthology, a major publication in the field.

In addition to being CEO of Cyber Database Solutions, Inc., Dr. Kim is also Founder, President and CEP of MaxScan, Inc., and Dean of the Ewha Institute of Science and Technology, Ewha Women's University, Seoul, Korea. Dr. Kim is also an ACM Fellow, in recognition of his "fundamental insights into query optimization in relational databases, support for engineering applications, and functionality and architecture of object oriented databases, and for extensive editorial service."
