citation

For great ability, dedication, and success in developing computer science education, and for outstanding achievements as a teacher.

Professor Yale N. Patt is an international authority in computer architecture. The results of his work have been honored by many scientific awards, including the ACM/IEEE CS Eckert-Mauchly Award. His work has had profound influence on the design of modern microprocessors.

In addition to these achievements in research and engineering, Yale Patt is also an outstanding educator. His is a unique gift of reaching out, and making contact with an audience. Many of his former students report that attending Patt's classes, and working with him, was a privilege, and an experience of great importance to their personal development.

In his distinguished career, Yale Patt has taught at several highly regarded universities, including the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and The University of Texas at Austin. In addition, he is also committed to continuing education outside the university classroom. Wherever he has taught, Professor Patt has had major impact on the development of the computer science curriculum.

His views on how computing should be taught have shaped many courses. Recently, these efforts have converged in an introductory textbook (co-authored by Sanjay Jeram Patel) that is bound to have a lasting effect on the field.

Professor Yale Patt has made significant contributions to the educational mission of the ACM, both as a dedicated teacher and as a developer of the curriculum.
