For the design and implementation of the IMPACT compiler infrastructure which has been used extensively both by the microprocessor industry as a baseline for product development and by academia as a basis for advanced research and development in computer architecture and compiler design.

Professor Hwu has made a major technical service contribution to both the microprocessor industry and the academic research community through the design, implementation, and wide distribution of the IMPACT compiler infrastructure.

In addition, he has made fundamental research contributions to the field of instruction-level parallel processing, a technology currently being used extensively in the microprocessor industry. Professor Hwu's is being recognized for his vision, innovation and dedication to technical service. His commitment to provide this infrastructure to the technical community has shown clear impact on both industry products and academic research publications.
